We recently did a metal roofing job in St. Augustine, Florida near the beach. We used .032 aluminum standing seam metal panels that are Kynar coated to protect the metal roof from the harsh environment and give it long lasting color and durability. Aluminum is the best option for coastal metal roofing as it won’t degrade or rust in the salt air. While discussing metal roofing options with the homeowner, it was decided that standing seam was best for his needs. Standing seam is an interlocking system that seals the panel fasteners and has high wind resistance which was a particular concern for the homeowners. They were tired of having to replace shingles whenever a strong storm came through.
This particular project presented unusual challenges due to the design and height of this three-story home. To address these challenges, we had to prepare differently than normal for the job. There was a particularly small area that was a physical impossibility for anyone to fit into. We needed special planning and removal of a portion of the roof deck to do the work and reassembled afterwards. Because of the height, extra precautions were needed to protect the workers and the home from damage while removing the old shingle roof as well. We used plywood to protect the garage door and placed tarps to protect the property from falling debris.
