In October we did a flat roof replacement in Port Orange. The current flat roof was worn out, had several leaks and in need of replacement.
There are several options available for flat roofing: single ply TPO, cold process, torch down and self-adhesive two-ply being the most common types. We discussed the options with the owner and decided a self-adhesive two-ply system would be the best option due to the roof having positive water flow and it is a cost-effective method. Without positive water flow a two-ply system would not be an option as it isn’t designed for a true flat roof.
There are two ways to apply a two-ply system. The first is direct to the deck without asphalt primer. The second is to apply a primer to the deck before installing the base sheet and the cap sheet. The primer creates a much stronger bond than a direct to deck application. Three C’s Roofing recommended the primer option as it was a better choice for this roof. In order for proper installation, the base sheet must be cut at 18 inches (a half roll), this offsets the seams so that the base and cap sheets do not end up seam on seam. First, the base sheet is applied, then the perimeter drip edge which also requires priming so the cap sheet will adhere to it. After final application of the cap sheet a large, weighted roller is used to smooth the material and eliminate any creases and bubbles.
